Born Elenora Fagan, Billie Holiday (played by Makeda Grier) had a difficult teen and young adulthood, which included working in brothels, both as a cleaning woman and a prostitute. Although her life suffered multiple tragedies she was still able to achieve fame as she obtained her dream of becoming a jazz singer.
