In this sensual experimental elegy by Harmony Korine, spellbinding infrared photography evokes a dreamlike portrait of a tormented assassin.
In his long-derided but now-beloved adaptation of the writer Paddy Chayevsky’s novel of the same name, the British filmmaker Ken Russell explores the relationship between psychedelics, love, and primal instincts. Edward Jessup (William Hurt) is a Columbia University psychopathologist who studies schizophrenia by subjecting himself to high doses of LSD while floating in a sensory deprivation tank. His experiments test the limits of his mind and body, and his obsession with uncovering the origins of human thought strains his marriage with fellow “whiz kid” Emily (Blair Brown). Over the course of their tumultuous relationship, Edward’s sudden transformations and retreat into psychedelics become indicative of a male desire to cut-off society and take on a more primal state-of-mind.

As time carries on, the lines between her dreams, fears, hopes, and reality begin to blur into one another. From French master Bertrand Bonello (The Beast, Zombi Child, Nocturama), COMA is “a neo-Lynchian slow burn masterpiece” (International Cinephile Society) that creates a dream-like representation of our present. Celebrated directorial duo the Ross Brothers (Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets and Contemporary Color) turn their pioneering hybrid lens to the cinematic road trip with GASOLINE RAINBOW. Undoubtedly candid yet deeply loving, this is an expansive portrait of the new generation as told in their own words. With high school in the rearview, five teenagers from inland Oregon embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted tail light, their mission takes them to a place they’ve never been — the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. The plan, in full: “Fuck it.” Through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets, they connect with outsiders on the fringes and discover their lives will be determined by the trails they blaze themselves. These are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World. A SXSW and Venice Film Festival selection, the mesmerizing GASOLINE RAINBOW depicts a wild and true coming-of-age. With a beating heart and an exuberant spirit, this rhapsodic look at today’s American West reminds us of the timeless joys of community.

A diary-cum-thriller-cum comedy-cum-horror film shot on an iPhone (RIP BlackBerry!) for zero dollars with friends, IN SEARCH OF GLADYS GLOVER was born in the darkness of winter in a post-pandemic 2022 after a fateful 35mm screening of George Cukor’s NYC classic IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU (1954). Indebted to the spirits of Larry Cohen, Anne Charlotte Robertson, and New York City herself, IN SEARCH OF GLADYS GLOVER is a time-shifting journey about the disorienting feeling of being in the city the past few years. It’s a movie for everyone who wakes up each day and continues to put one foot in front of other—laughing often, crying often, watching as many beautiful films and sports games as possible, aimlessly walking the city streets alone, making art, hanging with good friends—but ultimately doesn’t understand what the fuck is going on anymore.
The great Judy Holliday stars as Gladys Glover, a one-of-a-kind New York City girl who leaves her mark in the form of her name displayed on a giant billboard in Columbus Circle. Soon everyone in the city is enamored with the mysterious Gladys and wants to know who she is. The only one who is sour on her ingenious idea to make a name for herself is her boyfriend Pete Sheppard, a 16mm documentary filmmaker she meets in Central Park a few days before embarking on her billboard project. Most commonly described as a cautionary tale about fame, IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO you could just as easily be seen as a warning about dating insecure, judgemental, poor male artists. Behind its supposed happy (and predictable) ending lies a typically unanswered question about how exactly the wildly creative, full of life woman will fare after sacrificing herself (her career, her name, her city) for a dude. Shot on location in New York City in the 1950s, the true romance in Cukor's film doesn't happen between any two people but in the city itself, as it routinely delights in sharing the singular magic that exists here. Introduction by Gina Telaroli.
In 1979, South Africa’s fascist government sought to keep blacks and whites separate and unequal at all costs. But three young men from opposite sides of the color line dared to launch National Wake. THIS IS NATIONAL WAKE recounts the story of the “band that defied apartheid,” whose members and fans smashed every law to rebel — and documented themselves doing so in astonishing Super 8. Mirissa Neff’s acclaimed documentary is a dreamlike immersion into the wild journey of National Wake—a band whose vision of an anti-racist world resounds as loudly today as their Afro-punk sound. Co-presented with Pioneer Works. Post-screening Q&A with Mirissa Neff and NYU’s iconic "punk professor" Vivien Goldman.
When Virgil (Willie the Chimp) is recruited into a top-secret Air Force project, it’s up to two teenagers in love to save him and his buddies. This 1988 Human Rights Award nominee at the USA Political Film Society is both a tremendous dramatic vehicle for its lead human star, Matthew Broderick, and a powerful meditation on the US War Machine’s abuse of animals within experimental settings. Directed by Jonathan Kaplan (Truck Turner, Over the Edge, The Accused), this gentle film about ape-human relations is both thrilling and affirming.
